Christians Need to Read their Bibles

John 17:3 Amplified Bible (AMP) 2 become 1

And this is eternal life: [it means] to know (to perceive, recognize, become acquainted with, and understand) You, the only true and real God, and [likewise] to know Him, Jesus [as the] Christ (the Anointed One, the Messiah), Whom You have sent.

Knowing God is eternal Life. So if you don’t ‘know’ (intimate knowledge) God do you have eternal Life? The New Testament is originally written in the Greek. The word ‘know’ is the transliterated word ginōskō which comes from a Jewish idiom for sexual intercourse between a man and a woman. Sexual intercourse is implied for married people because they have entered into a covenant. This is how intimate God wants us with Him. Is this really happening with Christians? This is what the Word of God says:

Gen. 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

The New Testament says it like this:

Mark 10:5 – 8 Amplified Bible (AMP)

But Jesus said to them, Because of your hardness of heart [your condition of insensibility to the call of God] he wrote you this precept in your Law.
6 But from the beginning of creation God made them male and female.
7 For this reason a man shall leave [behind] his father and his mother and be joined to his wife and cleave closely to her permanently,
8 And the two shall become one flesh, so that they are no longer two, but one flesh.

If the marriage is not consummated (sexual intercourse) then there is no oneness or union. This is the ‘knowing’ the ‘oneness’ we should have with God.

Let’s look at it in Ephesians 5 and focus on verses  31 & 42:

Ephesians 5:27-32 Amplified Bible (AMP)
5: 27 That He might present the church to Himself in glorious splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such things [that she might be holy and faultless].
28 Even so husbands should love their wives as [being in a sense] their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself.
29 For no man ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and carefully protects and cherishes it, as Christ does the church,
30 Because we are members (parts) of His body.
31 For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.
32 This mystery is very great, but I speak concerning [the relation of] Christ and the church.

Now look at John 17:3 again;

John 17:3 Amplified Bible (AMP)

And this is eternal life: [it means] to know (to perceive, recognize, become acquainted with, and understand) You, the only true and real God, and [likewise] to know Him, Jesus [as the] Christ (the Anointed One, the Messiah), Whom You have sent.

If you don’ ‘know’ God then you don’t have eternal life. How do you have what you don’t know? If you only have a Starbucks card in your pocket and you don’t know it. Can you still use it to buy a drink? No, you cannot use what you don’t know you have! You can’t drink what you didn’t buy!

In John 17 we also find the relationship between Jesus who is the Word that became flesh   [John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.]   has power over all flesh inorder that He might give them eternal life in verse 2 of John 17 in the scripture below:

John 17:1-3 Amplified Bible (AMP)

1WHEN JESUS had spoken these things, He lifted up His eyes to heaven and said, Father, the hour has come. Glorify and exalt and honor and magnify Your Son, so that Your Son may glorify and extol and honor and magnify You.

2[Just as] You have granted Him power and authority over all flesh (all humankind), [now glorify Him] so that He may give eternal life to all whom You have given Him.

3And this is eternal life: [it means] to know (to perceive, recognize, become acquainted with, and understand) You, the only true and real God, and [likewise] to know Him, Jesus [as the] Christ (the Anointed One, the Messiah), Whom You have sent.

There is a union that occurs between a person and God’s Word that makes them one. Jesus prayed to the Father about this in John 17:6

John 17:6 Amplified Bible (AMP)

I have manifested Your Name [I have revealed Your very Self, Your real Self] to the people whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, and You gave them to Me, and they have obeyed and kept Your word.

Jesus continues praying about the Word of God and God’s people ‘knowing’ (oneness, union) Word of God.

John 17:8-9 Amplified Bible (AMP)

For the [uttered] words that You gave Me I have given them; and they have received and accepted [them] and have come to know positively and in reality [to believe with absolute assurance] that I came forth from Your presence, and they have believed and are convinced that You did send Me.
9I am praying for them. I am not praying (requesting) for the world, but for those You have given Me, for they belong to You.
